Ballroom tunes and tango shoes on the Yorke Peninsula
Geoff and Brenda Clarke beam as they waltz and tango across the empty floor of the Stansbury institute,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their unique passion unknown to the peaceful,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seaside town outside.
While many would assume the Clarke's are just another couple of retirees in the community,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], behind closed doors they explode with a life-long dancing passion.
"We met dancing, we both seemed to just click,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and every time we go on the floor the music seems to go through your body, it just energises you and makes you happy," said Brenda.
"We just can't get enough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," added Geoff.
Originally from the UK,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a daughter on the Yorke Peninsula led the pair to move and retire in Stansbury around seven years ago.
Having competed in endless amateur competitions throughout their life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they aim to practice several times a week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when health permits.
"It gets us out of the house and doing something we love,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so we just come down and practice and hopefully improve."
Brenda and Geoff said while they still felt young inside when they danced,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there were a few more ailments nowadays that interrupted their training.
"We're restricted at the moment because 18 months ago I had a five way bypass operation which impeded us a wee bit in coming back on dancing," Geoff said.
In addition, Geoff said he now needs a new hip and will have to take three months off dancing this year, but praises the sport for helping get him back on his feet.
"Basically, I've got to thank the dancing really for pulling me through on the bypass operation, because I was a fit person,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it kept all the valves and other muscles clear as a bell."
"Once Geoff gets his new hip there'll be no stopping him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and we're hoping to compete next Easter," said Brenda.
Dancing alone in a Yorke Peninsula institute was vastly different to dancing in crowded English halls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the pair said they were relishing in having the space all to themselves.
"I think the difference is now we're here practicing on our own,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yes it is hard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I think we're a bit selfish because we have the hall all to ourselves and we haven't got anybody in the way" Brenda said.
