Health Canada urges testing homes for radon
TORONTO - You cannot view it and you can't smell it. But radon in your house, seeping up with the foundation, might be a serious risk for your health.
But it is a risk that may be mitigated. And Health Canada wants homeowners to measure the radon within their dwellings and do something to reduce levels if they are high,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"It can be fixed. It's not hard to fix. Even though it isn't cheap, it isn't super expensive either," Kelley Bush,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], head of radon education and awareness at Health Canada, said Thursday within an interview.
Radon is the second leading reason for cancer of the lung after smoking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], accountable for about 16 per cent of cancer of the lung cases among Canadians. Lung cancer is the Number 1 cancer killer in Canada for both women and men.
But few people are aware of radon and few know of its link to cancer of the lung.
A survey released Thursday by Cancer of the lung Canada underscores this problem,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It demonstrated that just one percent of Canadians understand the proven fact that radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
"I get calls from those who have cancer of the lung who've never smoked each day in life and just discovered that their home has high levels," Bush said. "And they're scared not only for themselves, but for their members of the family who have been living in that house."
All houses possess some radon; it is a byproduct of uranium. Because the mineral stops working in soil, it releases radon. The gas works its distance to buildings through cracks in foundations or gaps around pipes.
A survey Health Canada released earlier this year demonstrated that about seven per cent of homes in Canada have radon levels topping 200 becquerels per cubic metre. (A becquerel may be the international unit for measuring radioactivity.) That's the threshold beyond which Health Canada says homeowners should do something.
Bush said the level of radon that's in a home depends upon a number of factors, such as the quantity of uranium in the soil under and around the home, the type of soil on which the house sits and the kind of ventilation system the home uses.
Levels also vary geographically. The Health Canada survey found under seven per cent of homes in Ontario had high levels of radon. However in New Brunswick, 1 in 5 homes topped 200 becquerels per cubic metre.
"If we're able to say it was one thing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in one place it would be a lot easier for Health Canada to obtain people to really do something about this," Bush said.
"The only thing we can say is everyone should test, because it's the only real method to know."
Commercial tests are available through hardware stores. Health Canada recommends testing for a the least 3 months,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], starting in the fall when doors and windows in homes are usually closed. Tests are mailed off to a laboratory, which will return a reading.
While there aren't any safe levels of radon, Bush said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 200 becquerels per cubic metre threshold was set after calculating potential health problems and the feasibility of asking individuals to make the changes required to 'abnormal' amounts in the home.
Radon reduction efforts cost roughly between $1,500 and $3,000, she said. People interested in reducing the radon within their home should look for any contractor who's certified with the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program.
