Identity theft scheme unveiled Knoxville News Sentinel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
District Court against Ulmer, charging him with a complicated conspiracy to steal identities, using vacant houses in West and South Knoxville, credit bureaus, the United States Postal Service, night vision goggles and even a voice changer to get lines of credit from banks in nine states, including Tennessee.
The filing of an information signals a plea deal since Ulmer must agree to skip a federal grand jury's consideration of the charges against him.
The information not only unveils Ulmer's scheme, but it also lays bare his bookshelf of how-to books employed in crafting the scheme, all of which the feds now intend to seize. They also want his computer equipment, night vision goggles and scope,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], voice changer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], magnetic card reader, telephone line tester and WiFi finder.
Most of the books instruct on ways to secretly glean personal information from others. Others deal with such topics as "Ancient and Modern Techniques of Ninja Mind Manipulation," "Poison Pen Letters," "A Hard Times Guide to Staying Alive in the City" and "Disguise Techniques."
A couple seem strictly personal, such as "The Naked Warrior" and "50 Ways to Get a Date."
The information alleges Ulmer used all this how-to know-how to craft a scheme to steal identities and rake in lots of cash via credit lines, cards and loans.
He began the scam in November 2006, hunting out vacant houses "for sale in locations with little pedestrian or vehicle traffic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs" in neighborhoods that included Sequoyah Hills and West Hills, Hamilton wrote,
Ulmer would file a form with the post office claiming those addresses as those of various people whose identities he sought to steal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the information stated. From that point, he used a variety of techniques, including the use of credit reports,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to steal identifying information which he then used to bilk banks, Hamilton wrote.
Jamie Satterfield may be reached at 865-342-6308,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
I hope the people he has hurt are able to get their credit cleared. ID theft is one of the hardest things a person will ever deal with. I have seen lives ruined. Good people now fighting a system trying to have records corrected. The laws will stop ID theft if people are caught, but nothing in the law will help the person use this data to have credit agencies, banks, finance companies remove these items from a persons history. That is now the big problem in ID theft.
By the way all the charges might be reversed by companies, but all the business owners take a 100% hit on these charges not the banks or credit card companies.

Based on the chargeback code,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], usually its a no win for the merchant and the money is auto debited from the business account. VISA and MC should hold the issuing banks to a higher standard. They don't care,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they take fees from processors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], issuers, merchants and the cardholders. But this has got to be one of the WORST stories I've seen in the News Sentinel in a long time. Talk about the lowest common denominator - who cares what's on the bookshelf? It's not relavent to the crime and only goes to make this into more of a story than it actually is. The information on how the crimes were actually committed have exactly nothing to do with any of the books - especially the more personal ones. The guy's going to jail,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I guess that the News Sentinel needs to out him as a lonely guy who has trouble talking to women. Good show there.
2. Don't tell a potential date that you are "a master of disguise" or "a ninja," and don't tell them that you can use "mind manipulation techniques" to force them to go out with you.
3. Don't tell your prospective date that you've been stalking him or her for the past week with your night vision goggles and scope
4. If you own and know how to use a voice changer, telephone line tester, Wi-Fi finder, night vision goggles and/or scope, return this book to the bookstore. You are WAAYYY too much of a nerd to ever get a date!
5. If you're a hacker, don't believe everything you see in "Sneakers." Even if you look like Robert Redford, normal people aren't going to go out with a computer geek.
6. At the end of the evening, don't ask your date if they'd like to "come up to one of [your] abandoned houses" and see your "big list of stolen credit card identities," if you know what I mean.
If anyone bothered to check, you might note that he didn't target any businesses other than banks. He didn't go down to Weigel's and max out someone else's credit card on gas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beer and candy or use it to put a small business under with the losses. He withdrew cash from banks. The banks are the ones left holding the bag here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not local businesses. Given the type of person Mr. Ulmer seems to be, I would think he'd make the argument that it's a victimless crime, but I'm sure the shareholders of those institutions would vehemently disagree.
Waldo, perhaps the books gave some sort of "cumulative knowledge" but if you'd bother to read the charges linked to the argument,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you might discover that the scheme had less to do with the sexy titles listed in the article than the ones that actually taught him how to commit his crimes, like "How to make drivers' licenses and other id on your home computer" and "Aquiring new id". None of the titles listed in the article serve ANY purpose other than to embarrass Mr. Ulmer. Perhaps he deserves that, but it's not exactly the apex of journalistic integrity.相关的主题文章:
