GEORGE NEGUS: Another bygone Olympic hero they labelled the 'Lithgow Flash'. In 1952, Marjorie Jackson had become the first Australian to win an Olympic gold medal since 1896 and also the first Australian woman to ever achieve this. After i was competing, you couldn't buy running shoes. You didn't have your brand shoes. I remember my first pair was a second-hand pair of men's shoes plus they were too big. Dad got them from somewhere. I'm not sure where. And I used to stuff all of them with newspaper and run inside them. Dad would draw my foot on some paper, send them down to Sydney and also the chap made the athletic shoes. Never once did they unfit me, so that will explain what a good shoemaker he was.
I earned ? 17s 6d per week. I gave Mum 7s 6d. It took me three months to save up my wages - what was left of these - to purchase both pair of running shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Dad made my blocks. If he hadn't,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I wouldn't have experienced any starting blocks. Would have had to dig out a hole having a trowel. When I got selected for the Olympic Games, they only competed overseas on cinders and we only ever ran on grass. So we'd never, ever had cinders to run on. Sometimes you couldn't even call at your hand in front individuals for that fog. Uh, Mr Monaghan was my trainer, and that he owned this second-hand motor car. Then I'd feel with my feet and hope I had been in the center of the track and then just keep running till I banged into the car, since you only saw the light concerning the last 5m! Looking back, I'm not sure how I didn't break a leg.
All I possibly could think of the Olympics was going overseas, you know.
