is one of the Bay Area's breakout playwright-directors and a lecturer in theater arts at . Earlier this year he staged a modern day version of "Don Juan" at his alma mater, Bay area State, and he'll oversee a new manufacture of "Macbeth" with the Shotgun Players. In May, his manufacture of "Yes, Yes to Moscow" with the is going to be included in the San Francisco International Arts Festival. We asked the Hayes Valley resident to give us a summary of the places where he loves to do his thinking.
Emma's , 1901 Hayes St. "Emma's is a straightforward, small, clean, comfortable neighborhood cafe with the usual drink and pastry offerings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in addition to free Wi-Fi. I like it since it is quiet and relaxed. It's close to the Haight, although not thronged with the tourists who pack the cafes there. I go to Emma's to do work, read, in order to have business conferences that won't feel rushed by the atmosphere."
, 500 Hayes St. "In the '90s I lived in three different apartments around Hayes Valley,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and watched it crawl from skank toward posh. I miss the times once the neighborhood was lingering approximately two worlds, before it made its final,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], total transformation right into a wealthy hipster mecca. Now I feel out-priced there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I do enjoy La Boulange during its off hours, when it's less crowded and I can enjoy the good coffee, pastries, and atmosphere without all of the fashion and hipster chatter."
Bay area Botanical Garden, Golden Gate Park, Ninth Avenue at Lincoln Way. "My gal pal and I often choose walks through Golden Gate Park and inevitably find themselves in the Botanical Garden. It's free, gorgeous, and a very calming spot to walk, sit, meditate, or debate art and politics. I also like the old Russian folks, seated on benches in their heavy coats and fur hats, who seem to happen to be transplanted from Gorky Park."
Arizmendi Bakery, 1331 Ninth Ave. "This small, worker-owned bakery constitutes a lot of good things, however i always go for their pizza. They provide one kind of thin-crust pizza and also the toppings change daily. It is good, without fail, and makes a nice method to punctuate the finish of a walk through the nearby Botanical Garden before heading back into the park or home."
Magnolia Pub Brewery, 1398 Haight St. "A good, loud pub that brews its eclectic roster of beer and serves up very tasty food. The food menu has become a bit overpriced for my tastes - a current $13 bowl of clam chowder am $8 - and as a result I've found I'm increasingly less inclined to visit there to eat. But the beer is excellent, creative, homemade stuff, still affordable and well worth a regular visit."
Sundance Kabuki Cinema, 1881 Post St. "The newly remodeled Kabuki is classy, uniquely designed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an environmentally friendly facility, sports the only real cinema seating in town that my aching back actually feels comfortable relaxing in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and - hallelujah! - does not show annoying television commercials before the film."
, 111 Powell St. "I hate searching for clothes. Even more,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I hate paying a lot of money for garments. However I also prefer to like what I'm wearing, as well as for it to suit me well. DSW has last year's type of shoes from good brands on sale prices. Since my shoes are my car, this is the place I usually visit buy new tires."
North Beach. "I accustomed to spend time in North Beach a great deal when I was in college. Typically I'd go to a tiny Chinese joint alongside an old porn theater off Washington Square. For $3.50 the house chow mein kept me going all day. I would digest it farther up Columbus Avenue at Cafe Greco with a well-made cappuccino along with a book, and that was my afternoon. The Chinese joint has since closed, however i still prefer to sit with a cappuccino and a book at Cafe Greco and pass a couple of hours failing to read while I watch people and think about the world."
at , 351 Turk St. "The Theater Salon is one thing I have been involved with in the last year. Every three months approximately a salon is thrown about the stage of Last Planet Theatre within the Tenderloin. A cross portion of artists, critics, administrators, and audience members gather to consume, drink, and talk seriously about the theater. This is an invite-only affair at the moment and try to a stimulating event."
Original Joe's, 144 . "I mourn the loss of this place,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which was hit by a bad kitchen fire back in October. It isn't that the food was spectacular by current foodie standards, but instead the cheap dark wine and overly generous plates of ravioli were extremely satisfying in an old-school Italian American way. The authentic atmosphere wasn't made to look retro. It actually was retro! The friendly, no-nonsense waiters wore tuxedos and spoke in accents one couldn't always place. It had been a popular hangout for artists and audiences since way back when,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is generate an income found realize it. I dearly hope they eventually reopen."
