Trendy Chinese slippers are the soles of summer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Move over sneakers and flip-flops, there's a new shoe tearing up the streets.
They're Chinese slippers that women are snatching up by the dozen -- and then some -- because they cost as little as $3 a pair.
Thirteen-year-old Sharon A. Noel on warm weather days trades in her sneakers and heels for the mesh flats decorated with sequined flowers. She owns 15 pairs in blue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], white, and pink.
''They're in style," said the Boston teenager. ''You can wear it with whatever you want. You can wear them with pajamas."
The plastic slippers, imported from various makers in China, are sold in many places, including Chinatown shops, trendy retailer Urban Outfitters, and department stores. The prices range from as little as $3 a pair from a Chinatown street vendor to about $20 at Filene's. While there are no numbers to quantify how many slippers have been sold, retailers say the style is one of the summer's big fashion hits.
''Everybody's wearing them," said Brian Hull, store manager for Urban Outfitters in Cambridge.
Indeed, it's not just young girls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but young professionals, some Democratic National Convention delegates, and older women who are pairing the low-maintenance shoes with power suits and evening gowns. Those who bought them say they are cheap, comfortable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and outperform the average flip-flop.
''Flip-flops can't put in mileage," said Susan Duane, 48,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of Wellesley,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who owns three pairs of slippers. ''I'm not really into trends, but it's so inexpensive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I decided to go for it."
The Chinese slippers are the latest to make their footprint in the casual shoe category. White,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], president of the Paris Fashion Institute in Boston. These trendy slippers are not to be confused with other types of simple shoes imported from China,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which lack the color and sparkle of the popular slippers.
As for why women are buying as many pairs as if they were Imelda Marcos,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], White justified the behavior. ''It's not like you're buying a Prada shoe," she said. ''Nobody feels guilty about it."
Noel, the owner of 15 pairs, said she buys in bulk because she wears them so much they begin to fray. And unlike sneakers, the mesh design gives women's feet air conditioning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she added.
But even though the slippers are relatively inexpensive, stores and vendors selling the product can take healthy profits.
One of them, Berk's Store in Harvard Square, hawks the slippers for $10 a pair, selling as many as 10 pairs a day on weekends and about five pairs each weekday, said assistant manager Marc Wolfson.
Berk's buys the slippers from Cheng's Enterprises Inc. The slippers purchased in bulk usually cost retailers around $1.75 for each pair,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Cheng Paing, sales manager for Cheng's Enterprises.
''That's the hottest slipper in town right now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Paing said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], adding his company gets wholesale orders that range from 60,000 to 100,000 pairs per week.
Men are even buying the shoes -- as gifts for their lady friends, said Maria Yee, wife of Rich Yee, who owns Man Ken Co, a gift shop in Boston's Chinatown. And some customers, like 26-year-old Rachelle Willard of Cambridge, buy the slippers and send them to friends abroad.
But don't expect the trend to last long, said Jay Calderin, founder and executive director of Fashion Week Boston. ''The look can be charming with the right outfit," he said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ''but they often miss the mark by being matched with inappropriate garments."
